Sidon (Saida) was at a moment in history, the principal port out of which the
Phoencians sailed to conquer the Mediterranean world.
The city was constantly harrassed by invaders: Philistines, Persians, Greeks, Arabs.
The Crusaders were ousted by Saladin in 1187, and the sea fortress from this period is now the symbol
of the city.
Saida is Arabic for "fishing"

Fransoise was taking us on a tour of Sour (Tyre). She specifically requested that we avoid walking on the mosaic floor
of the old temples.
Uncle Joe went ahead and walked on the mosaic. His wife told him "yaa Joe...didnt you hear what Fransoise said? She said
not to walk on the mosaic" (she said this in lebanese) and uncle Joe responded "Shou ya mara...am i the first and last person
to walk on the mosaic...?"...to our amusement, leaving the tour guide speachless.
